About SGF
History
The Shady Grove Farm
purebred Angus herd originated in 1958 when Charles Curry
purchased his first registered heifer from G. Dayton Hodges of
Arbor Hill Farm for a 4-H project. Over the next several years foundation
females were purchased from Fred and Jimmy Carter of Skyview
Farms, Pete Myers of Goose Run Farm, Glen Yount of Green Hills
Farm, R. H. and M. E. Ewing, H. P. Mays and Son, G. T. Ward,
Alpine Farms, Eldon Farm, and Bromley Farms. In the early 70's, several
performance tested bulls were purchased from the first
performance tested bull sales of Martin Jorgensen in Ideal, South Dakota. Rito 707
of Ideal 533 (149), Emulous 127 of Ideal
533 (a maternal brother to "149"), and selected AI sires were used. A performance
testing program was implemented in 1975 and bulls were performance
tested at the Virginia B.C.I.A. bull testing stations at
Culpeper and Red House. Over the past 30 years, the herd grew to 100
cows by retaining home grown replacement
heifers.
